‘Industry leader to run skill development mission’
Our Bureau
New Delhi, March 4 The Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, on Monday said that the proposed national skill development mission would be placed outside the Government and that an industry leader would be invited to run the mission.
He also said that capital of Rs 15,000 crore would be garnered for the mission and that only the initial capital has been pegged at Rs 1,000 crore.
“It is going to be a challenge for you (private sector) to deliver the skill development mission in two years and show to the world that private sector can work with the Government and put in place world class structures for imparting skills. Then you can claim that more public private partnerships (PPP) should come in social delivery sectors,” Mr Chidambaram said.
The Finance Minister expressed “disappointment” over the slow pace in adoption of industrial training institutes (ITI) by the private sector.
In the last three years, he pointed out that the private sector has signed only 244 MoUs with State Governments when they had the potential to do 1,000.
“Why is corporate India reluctant to take on responsibility when you say that government is performing badly in delivery of services?”
