Major ports traffic up 12.16% in 11 months

Our Bureau

Kolkata, March 5

Till February, in 11 months of the current fiscal, Kandla port, with a total traffic throughput of 59.04 million tonnes (mt), topped the list of major ports in cargo handling.

Visakhapatnam port ranked second with 58.08 mt and Mumbai port, 52.01 mt, third, followed by Chennai, 51.71 mt. Kolkata port (together with Haldia) ranked number fifth with 51.57 mt, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru port, 50.35 mt, Paradip, 38.5 mt, New Mangalore, 32.83 mt, Mormugao, 30.69 mt, Tuticorin, 19.44 mt, Kochi 14. 59 mt and Ennore, 10.5 mt.

The total volume of traffic handled by major ports in first 11 months thus is 469.36 mt as compared to 418.48 mt or a growth of 12.16 per cent.

Visakhapatnam port has been occupying number one position for the past few years. It remains to be seen if the port succeeds in retaining the position by performing exceedingly well in the current month. But then Kandla is also trying hard and the gap of one mt is not easy to bridge.

Kolkata port, (together with Haldia), was number two for two successive years but not any more. This is largely because of the negligible growth at Haldia. Paradip port will most probably join the 50-mt club in 2008-09. This will be possible with the commissioning of the single point mooring to handle crude. At one go, the port’s throughput is to jump by nine to 10 mt. In 2007-08, the port’s traffic volume is likely to exceed 42 mt.
