Our Bureau

Pune, March 5 Robots are set to play Dahi Handi – celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth. This is the theme of the Asia Pacific Robocon 2008 to be held in Pune and jointly organised by the Maharashtra Institute of Technology (MIT) and Doordarshan.

Talking to presspersons, Dr Milind Pande, Convener, Organising Committee, and Prof A. M. Chakradeo, Chairman, Contest Committee, said students from 38 colleges will participate in the event and the theme for Robocon is Mission Govinda.

The event is scheduled from March 8 to March 9 at the MIT campus in Pune. Dr. Pande said that the theme was based on the mythological stories of Lord Krishna. The robots will have to take the butter, which is placed on the tall pole within a time limit . For this students will make manual and automatic robots. The competition is for undergraduates from science, engineering and polytechnic institutes.

Out of the 1,500 colleges in the country, only 38 had responded while in Vietnam the participation is around 300 teams and Thailand 129. MIT plans to raise funds of around Rs 50 lakhs from sponsors and other internal resources for the national Robocon. Dr Pande said MIT was setting up a robotics lab, which will conduct seminars and workshops on robots.
