Bangalore, March 5 For a young graduate, career choices are never easy. Choosing a career that matches one’s abilities and aspirations is one of life’s most difficult and important decisions. Which career is right, what options are open, how to qualify, these and many other, are million dollar questions for them. They need assistance to separate fact from hype.

A guest lecture titled ‘Career opportunities and personality development’ organised by ‘The Business Line Club’ for the students of Al-Ameen Institute of Management Studies here, gave insights into popular and emerging career options, employment trends in India and booming opportunities.

Mr G. Raghavendra Prasad, General Manager (Sourcing), TeamLease Services, pointed out the difference between career and job, different economies and its impact on employment. “Remember, life is not divided into semesters. You need to craft your career. A career is a long term goal and a great career is a long-term goal with difficult but achievable ambitions,” he said.

Drawing a parallel between the old industrial economy and the current customer-driven one, Mr Prasad remarked that the current economy has positively impacted employment generation. “Now, there are opportunities galore all over the world for skilled and educated persons. While in the industrial economy, there were only limited opportunities. Earlier, information technology was used only to enhance internal efficiencies, while now IT is a growth driver. While profit was considered a success those days, now it is the market capitalisation. Hence, there is pressure not only to perform but also to outperform,” Mr Prasad said.

He said the present day corporates look for persons with good communication and interpersonal skills, confident as well as ambitious, and also informed as well as individuals with cognitive abilities.

Mr N. Rajashekar, Regional General Manager of The Hindu, Bangalore, said the economic boom and high growth that the country is experiencing spells good news for youngsters. Newspapers provide in-depth information on the happenings in corporate world, which is very crucial for management students, he said.
