41-week low offer at Coonoor tea auction

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, March 5 Catalogues of the various brokers show that the volume coming up for Sale No: 10 of the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) to be held here on Thursday and Friday is the lowest of the last 41 weeks.

Only 6.84 lakh kgs have been catalogued. This is some 38,000 kgs lower than the offer of the previous week. At prevailing prices, the reduction in volume equals Rs 20 lakh.

Crop loss

Nevertheless, the volume is 64,000 kgs more than the offer this time last year, when VAT issue was vexing the trade.

The low offer is said to arise because of crop loss caused by the red spider infestation in many plantation pockets in the Nilgiris.
