Steel producers hike spot prices

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 5 Barely days after rolling back prices at the behest of the Steel Ministry, some steel producers led by Tata Steel on Wednesday hiked spot prices between Rs 1,500 and Rs 3,000 for various products.

“We have hiked the price of our long products by Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000; and Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 for flat products owing to rise in input costs,” company sources said.

Private players

Public sector giant SAIL has also increased prices by Rs 1,500-2,500 per tonne.

Sources in the company told Business Line that SAIL was hiking prices because of the lead taken by private players. Normally, it is SAIL which sets the trend for pricing of steel products in the market.

Essar has also hiked prices by Rs 2,500 across the board, market sources said. Other steelmakers too are understood to have increased prices, but the respective spokespersons did not confirm the same.
