It is now an open secret that there is no love lost between the Commerce Minister, Kamal Nath, and his Minister of State, Jairam Ramesh. This time the ‘battle’ went up another notch when the Minister held a meeting on SAARC in the capital.

Now, Jairam has been carefully nurturing the SAARC constituency, having visited Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Maldives to further the cause of the regional grouping. But when the recent meeting took place, Jairam was apparently kept in the dark.

Asked by a scribe about the proposal to further reduce the negative import list, which has items that are not allowed tariff concessions, Jairam was taken aback because he was not even aware of the meeting. Obviously, the junior Minister’s ‘intelligence network’ is not functioning properly. Reports suggest he later called in senior officials of the Ministry for a low-down on what transpired at the meeting.
