IIM-A: 35% rise in average salary offers for agri-biz students

Virendra Pandit

Ahmedabad, March 6

The average salary offered by companies to the students of two-year post-graduate programme on agri-business management (PGP-ABM) at the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIMA) has gone up this year by 35 per cent and a student has been offered the position of the Chief Executive Officer.

Lateral placements

The lateral placements has reconfirmed the programme’s position as the best sector-specific programme in the country, an IIMA spokesperson said here on Wednesday.

A total of 10 firms, which participated in the lateral placement process conducted recently, made 16 offers. The average salary increased from Rs 10 lakh last year to 13.50 lakh per annum this year, a jump of 35 per cent. A quarter of this batch already had the pre-placement offers from different companies.

The icing on the cake was the CEO position offered by RUDI to Mr Anup Kumar, who had a prior work experience of about six years. Lists of the first timers include PricewaterhouseCoopers, Feedback Ventures, Transgraph Consultancy and National Institute of Smart Governance.

The highlight for this year was the diversity in the roles that industry has offered to ABM graduates. The lateral recruitment process is conducted specifically for students with prior work experience of at least 18 months. The significant amount of prior work experience of the batch of 2006-08 has led to an increase in the number of students vying for lateral placements. For the batch of 2008, out of 31students, 15 were eligible for laterals.

Besides the regular recruiters, organisations representing a wider spectrum of sectors viz. consulting, real estate, finance, retail and micro finance participated in the process.

Yes Bank and the Hyderabad-based NISG offered strategic roles, while consulting majors such as PwC and Feedback came hunting for mid-management positions.

Financial services start-up FINO also offered diverse roles.
