Letters Curbs on rice exports With reference to the report, “More curbs on rice exports to ensure domestic availability” (Business Line, March 7), it is heartening to note that the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has taken measures such as hiking the minimum export price (free on board) of non-basmati rice from $500 to $650 per tonne, slapping port restrictions, fixing the minimum f.o.b export price from Rs 20,000 per tonne to Rs 26,000 per tonne to ensure availability of rice in the domestic market. There is no point in earning dollars at the expense of our economic welfare. After all, charity begins at home. Moreover, tightening rice exports would help the Indian currency depreciate (due to decrease in supply of foreign currency) and export industries such as textiles and handicrafts to recover from sluggish demand for their goods (because of the rise in the value of rupee) from abroad.
