Check on exports

— K.K. Mustafah

Easing supplies in local market: Workers winnowing paddy in a field in Thrissur, Kerala. India is the world’s second largest rice producer after China and a significant exporter accounting for 12-15 per cent of world trade. The country usually exports about 4-5 per cent of its rice production, including basmati and non-basmati varieties. Basmati rice enjoys good demand overseas and exports are about 10-11 lakh tonnes a year, valued at about Rs 3,000 crore. The Government has imposed restrictions on rice exports in a move aimed at ensuring adequate supplies in the domestic market.
