Letters Two airports I endorse the view expressed in the editorial “One airport or two” (Business Line, March 7) that retention of two airports each at Bangalore and Hyderabad is not a viable proposition at least for now. As rightly stated, the government must arrive at an understanding with the promoters and developers. If, however, the government goes back on its promise and understanding, it will pave the way for a legal battle and discourage developers from taking up similar projects in future. Involvement and participation of the private sector is crucial for building and expanding infrastructural facilities in India. The second consideration by which the government must be guided is the volume of business. For a couple of years, until the airport area gets integrated with the city, the time and expenses involved in travel may discourage travel by air through the new airport. Retention of both the airports will no doubt help passengers get the best in terms of quality of service. However, division of flights between two airports may create confusion and transit passengers may be put to lot of inconvenience. The government must, on the other hand, give priority to developing connecting roads and other needed facilities in the new airports. In course of time, once the airport areas get integrated fully with the concerned cities, the problem of distance can be solved to a large extend. K. K.
