Kerala tourism revenue crosses Rs 10,000-cr mark

Sankar Radhakrishnan

Thiruvananthapuram, March 9 In 2007, for the first time ever, the total revenue generated by tourism in Kerala crossed Rs 10,000 crore.

According to figures released by Kerala Tourism, the total revenue, including direct and indirect, generated from tourism in Kerala last year was Rs 11,433 crore. This represents a 25.28 per cent increase over total tourism revenue in 2006, which was Rs 9,126 crore. Foreign exchange earned by the State’s tourism sector also grew by 32.82 per cent in 2007 and touched Rs 2,640.94 crore.

Last year also saw Kerala’s international tourist arrivals crossing the 5-lakh mark for the first time. In 2007, over 5.15 lakh foreign tourists visited the State.

This was a 20.37 per cent increase over 2006 when a little over 4.28 lakh tourists visited Kerala.

Domestic tourist arrivals in Kerala also grew in 2007, with over 66.42 lakh domestic tourists visiting the State last year. This is a 5.92 per cent increase over 2006 when a little over 62.71 lakh domestic tourists visited Kerala.

The figures gathered by Kerala Tourism also show that the efforts to position Kerala as a ‘year round’ destination continue to yield results. Last year, both foreign and domestic tourist arrivals were strong in the traditional ‘off season’ of May-August.

For instance, last year during the June-August period, when the South West Monsoon is experienced in Kerala, 79,024 foreign tourists and over 15 lakh domestic tourists visited the State.

However, the traditional ‘peak season’ months of January and February and November and December continue to account for a majority of the tourist arrivals in Kerala.
