Our Bureau Hyderabad, March 10 Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and the Denmark-based biotech company, 7TM Pharma, have entered into drug discovery collaboration on select drug targets in the area of metabolic disorders. Under the terms of the agreement signed by both the companies, Dr Reddy’s and 7TM Pharma will collaborate to identify clinical candidates for pre-selected targets. They will jointly develop these candidates from the pre-clinical stage up to phase IIa (proof-of-concept) stage. On successful completion of a phase IIa study, they may either license-out the candidate for further development and commercialisation to a larger pharmaceutical company or continue further co-development and commercialisation. The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed. “7TM has established a track record as one of the leading drug discovery companies focusing on G Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs). “We are excited at the prospects of combining 7TM’s capabilities with Dr Reddy’s to discover and develop innovative products,” Dr Rajinder Kumar, President, Research, Development and Commercialisation, Dr Reddy’s, said in a release. 7TM receptors or GPCRs contain a generic protein structure of seven bundled trans-membrane (7TM) helices that is extensively used for a variety of stimuli e.g. photons, monoamines, fatty acids, peptide hormones, and glycoproteins. Receptor targetsApproximately, 40 per cent of today’s prescription drugs target 7TM receptors, but utilise only 5 per cent of the known 7TM receptor targets. 7TM Pharma is tightly integrating its structure based drug discovery approach, Site-Directed Drug Discovery, with traditional medicinal chemistry and expert knowledge on peptides and has thereby created a drug discovery platform that accelerates the generation of new drugs targeting 7TM receptors. R&D programmesIn recent years, it has established a broad pipeline of research and development programmes based on in-house drug discovery and development in the area of metabolic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
