Bill on Prasar Bharati Act tabled in Lok Sabha

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 10 A Bill to amend the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act, 1990, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday by the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Mr P.R. Dasmunsi.

The Bill seeks to reduce the tenure of the Chairman of Prasar Bharati from six to three years.

An upper age limit was also introduced for the position of chairman at 70 years. The Minister said it would help bring diversity of experience at the top level for the benefit of the organisation.

The Bill also seeks to increase the upper age limit of the Chief Executive Officer and executive members of the public broadcaster from 62 to 65 years, but reduces their tenure from six to five years.

Mr Dasmunsi said in the statement of objects and reasons that it is being felt necessary to rationalise such matters “in order to inject sectoral experience to rejuvenate Prasar Bharati and its Board.”
