New schemes to help exporters under study

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 11 The Government is considering providing relief to exporters in certain sectors which have been affected by the appreciation of the rupee.

“We are in the process of formulating the Foreign Trade Policy, which is likely to be out by next month. We are examining policies for the exporters which will be WTO-compatible and which can neutralise levies which are not being refunded at the moment,” said the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr Kamal Nath, at the sidelines of the International Chambers of Commerce event organised at FICCI.

He said that the Government was looking at new schemes and sops to help exporters.

Commenting on the annual export estimates for the financial year ending March 2008, Mr Nath said, “Against a target of $160 billion for the financial year 2007-08, exports are expected to reach at a level of $152-155 billion, a 20 per cent increase from the previous year despite the adverse global economic situation.”
