British Council to focus on mitigating effects of climate change

Our Bureau

Mangalore, March 11

Mitigating the effects of climate change in an urban environment will be the focus area of the project ‘Low Carbon Futures’ of the British Council, according to Mr Chris Gibson, Director (South India), British Council.

Inaugurating a meet on ‘Green building’ – jointly organised by the Association of British Scholars, the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers, and Architects’ Guild in Mangalore on Tuesday – he said that British Council has chosen to focus on cities because cities are source of 80 per cent of carbon emissions in the region despite the fact that only a third of the population lives in the cities.

Grim scenario

“The Oxford Analytical Report, commissioned by the UK-India Round Table in 2006, forecasts that the next 15 years will see a 70 per cent growth in India’s urban population leading to a rapid increase in carbon emissions,” he said.

Stating that science and technology will help in showing the best ways to mitigate the worst effects of climate change, he said the UK and India have collaborated successfully on climate change research, and the relationship is a fine example of mutual benefits the two nations stand to gain by working closely together. British Council and IIT Madras will soon organise a conference to look into some these issues, he added.
