Our Bureau

Mangalore, March 12 There is a need to record the economic history of coastal Karnataka, said Dr N.K. Thingalaya, former Chairman and Managing Director of Syndicate Bank.

Delivering the keynote address at a symposium on ‘Development of Coastal Karnataka: A historical view’, organised by the Department of Economics of Mangalore University here on Wednesday, he said that the region has given birth to several banks and other institutions. But the economic history is yet to be recorded at regional level.

Dr Thingalaya suggested that Mangalore University can take a lead in recording the economic history of coastal Karnataka.

Stressing the need for improvement of transport infrastructure for the growth of the region, he said Konkan Railway network along coastal Karnataka should be connected with other parts of Karnataka through railway lines. He urged the Government to lay a railway line between Ankola and Hubli. This line would improve the railway infrastructure along coastal Karnataka with rest of the State. In addition to this, steps should also be taken for doubling of railway network along coastal Karnataka.

Inaugurating the symposium, Ms Usha Suresh, Director, Department of Archives, Karnataka Government, said that the department is ready to archive the banking history of the region.

Prof K.M. Kaveriappa, Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University, presided over the symposium. Prof G.V. Joshi, Director of the symposium, also spoke.
