DoT eases number allocation scheme

New Delhi, March 12

With mobile users base growing at over 5 million a month, mobile operators are finding it difficult to keep pace in terms of finding adequate phone numbers to allocate to all the new subscribers. In a bid to ease the crunch, the Department of Telecom has decided to allocate numbering codes in batches of 10 slots aimed at allowing the operators more capacity. Until now, DoT was allocating numbering scheme in batches of 2 or 3 slots on the mobile switching centre making it d ifficult for the operators to plan for the large number of new subscribers. The move will benefit companies such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone which are adding more than a million users a month.
