Thiruvananthapuram, Mar. 13

By the end of this year, Kerala is expected to become an e-literate State through the State Government’s Akshaya project, said the Chief Minister, Mr V. S. Achuthanandan.

Inaugurating the Kerala IT.com exhibition at Technopark this evening, he said that the Akshaya project was launched to bridge the digital divide and to use ICT as a tool for community development. Besides imparting basic computer literacy to one member of each family in the State, the Akshaya project also facilitates delivery of various e-governance services to people in Kerala, he said.

Even as Kerala proposes to develop IT parks in all districts of the State, steps are also being taken to develop Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi as the foremost IT centres in the region, he said. In keeping with this objective, integrated townships specifically for the IT and ITES sectors are being set up in both cities, he pointed out. The proposed Technocity in Thiruvananthapuram and Smart City in Kochi will offer state-of-the-art infrastructure, he added.

The State Industries Minister, Mr Elamaram Kareem, said on the occasion that the industries department is working on initiatives to develop the electronics industry in the State. The electronics industry plays a vital role in supporting the IT industry, he pointed out. The State Government is also doing its best to create an industry-friendly environment in Kerala, he added.

Earlier in the day, Mr R. Chandrashekhar, Additional Secretary, Department of Information Technology, Government of India, inaugurated the National e-Governance Programme Advocacy Conference at the Technopark.
