The Hindu Business Line : Sikkim to host first international flower show

Rare show: Twelve countries, seventeen states and over 58 groups from different parts of the country will participate in a three-day International Flower Show starting from March 14 at Saramsa Garden, about 14 km south of Gangtok. —

Gangtok, March 13 The Saramsa Garden near Ranipool in East Sikkim, about 15 km from here, will be in full bloom when it opens for the International Flower Show starting from March 14.

Themed “Sikkim-Nature’s Own Garden," the first International Flower Show in the region will be inaugurated by Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commission, Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia.

More than 100 participants, including 12 international florists from 22 countries, are expected to take part in the event, said Mr R. Telang, Secretary, State Horticulture and Cash Crop Development Department. They will be coming in from The Netherlands, Germany, France, Norway, China, Taiwan, New Zealand, Korea, Thailand, US, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

About 58 private parties and agencies from different parts of the country and 17 State Governments, and more than 300 floriculturists and vegetable growers, are taking part in the festival.

Delegates and participants from Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, North Eastern states and other major growing States are also expected for the event. The participants from neighbouring hilly regions such as Kalimpong, Darjeeling and Mirik are also participating.

Organised for the first time in the State, the State Agriculture and Cash Crop Development Department is spending Rs 19 crore for the event, especially in the management and landscaping of the garden. Talking to Business Line, Mr Telang said the event will be a first step towards promoting Sikkim as a major floriculture State in the country. “This event has been organised primarily to showcase the floriculture potential and developments in the State. Floriculture in Sikkim and the North East is emerging as one of the opportunities with great prospects to turn the tide of rural economy and we are hoping to cash on to this,” he said.
