Textile meet inaugurated in Bangalore

Bangalore, March 14

The textile revolution must spread to all parts of the State beyond Bangalore, said Mr Ashokkumar C. Manoli, Commissioner for Textile Development and Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Government of Karnataka.

The Karnataka Government will soon announce a Rs 500 crore textile policy that will take care of location and dispersal of industries in Karnataka, he said. The policy will also “address the problems of the powerloom sector, labour, power, sourcing and machinery,” added Mr Manoli, in his guest address at the inauguration of the two-day ‘Buyers-Sellers Meet’ in the city.

Mr Manoli said the domestic market offered textile companies lot of opportunity. With the rupee appreciating against the dollar, the domestic sector will ensure that companies do not incur huge losses, he said. But despite the unfavourable currency exchange situation, the powerloom sector is poised for export growth, he added.

Mr M.S. Mathivanan, Chairman, Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council, said home furnishing is a growing opportunity with good demand, which exporters must tap into.

The buyer-seller sourcing meet is the 14th in the country and the fourth in Bangalore. Around 21 sellers are participating in the meet.
