T.E. Raja Simhan Chennai, March 14 Tata Consultancy Services has shifted its weekly holidays in Chennai to Sunday and Monday from the present Saturday and Sunday. The change will take effect from this week, according to a company official. The change follows a recent request to the industry, including manufacturing and services sectors, from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) to consider a shift in the holidays to consume less electricity. Some of the other major IT companies with large facilities in the city are also considering the proposal to shift the holidays, source said. “We have not decided yet [on the holiday change], but assessing the options,” said Mr Subu D. Subramanian, Director and Senior Vice-President, Manufacturing and Automotive Business Group, Satyam Computer Services. The TNEB suggested to industry to gear up to face power shortage. It is said that during the peak hours, there is a shortage of 1,000 MW in the State. “We cannot make the suggested shift owing to client committed SLAs [service level agreements] on the type of work we do and also because of our operations planning. We have significant back-up generating capacity,” said Mr Manish Jain, Head-Corporate Communications (India and Sales and Marketing for Insurance & Business Process Solutions), Perot Systems. A number of companies with large facilities have significant back up power generating capacity. The TNEB on its part also requested the industry to work more during night hours and use back up generators during peak hours, sources said.
