Australia woos skilled workers from India

Hyderabad, March 16 With a view to attract skilled workers from abroad, South Australia has made the migration system easier and simpler and Indian skilled workers are welcome, according to Mr Mike Rann, Premier of South Australia.

Addressing members of the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry here on Saturday, Mr Rann, who was leading a 25-member trade mission to India, said migration of skilled workers from India into South Australia had been growing.

Indian influx

“Many Indians are choosing to make South Australia their permanent home. About 28 per cent of the total skilled workers in South Australia are from India and migration from India to South Australia has increased 55 per cent last year compared to previous year,” Mr Rann said.

There was lot of scope for bilateral business relations between India and South Australia in mining, information technology, food and wine sectors, engineering services, renewable energy and environmental management, among others, he said.

Impressive growth

Mr Raymond Garrand, Chief Executive, Department of Trade and Economic Development, Government of South Australia, said the education sector had shown impressive growth in his country and there was scope for collaboration between educational institutions in India and South Australia.

Australia has been a major destination for Indian students.

Enrolment of Indian students in Australia is growing at an average 41 per cent since 2002, Mr Atluri Subba Rao, President, Fapcci said.

In 2007 alone, 62,000 students from India joined various Australian educational institutions, he added.

Mr Gollapalli Surya Rao, Minister for Small Scale Industries, Government of Andhra Pradesh, said there is a huge pool of technical manpower in the State, which could be tapped into.
