City on wheels

This is with reference to the “The city that moves on two wheels” (Business Line, March 14). It is amazing and interesting to note that the Amsterdam has around 600,000 bicycles vis-À-vis a population of 750,000, bicycle paths. The popularity of the cycle in Amsterdam comes from the Netherlands’ penchant for the principles of traffic separation while planning its towns and cities.

This article is pertinent in today’s scenario where global warming has become the first item on the agenda for any government. The use of the bicycle is relevant today from the point of congestions, conservation of natural energy resources and containing pollution. Several corporates are following this approach. The Government of India and the metros should take a cue from Amsterdam and take necessary steps to include bicycle paths while planning towns and cities.
