‘We recruit for attitude and train for skills’

Madurai, March 17

A global mindset is necessary for aspiring management graduates, as what is happening in the world is happening in India today, according to Mr M.M. Murugappan, Managing Director, TI Cycles of India, Chennai.

Activities today carry a global context and management of resources is focused on satisfying the varied needs of consumers around the world. A restaurant in Madurai may be seen as a local activity but the quality of service and products may attract global customers, said Mr Murugappan in his inaugural address at a ‘National Conference on Emerging Paradigms in Management’ organised by the Department of Management Studies, The American College in association with The Hindu Business Line, here on Saturday.

Global brands are advertised in India and functionally they cannot be considered purely a local activity.

The strategies behind them are global. When opportunities present themselves for a sustainable activity, institutions are built around on that to serve current and future interests.

Business is done in the modern context through e-mail and mobile. As such, an international perspective has become necessary among those who manage the resources to understand the happenings around and integrate with the unfolding trends. In this, attitude matters most to be part of the evolving process. “We recruit for attitude and train for the skills,” he added.

The need to combine the resources among the management institutions to offer the best curriculum for management graduates in tune with the change and requirements of time was stressed by Dr U. Surya Rao, Professor and Head, Department of Management Studies, Madurai Kamaraj University, in his key note address. Technical sessions were held on Marketing, Human Resources, Finance and Systems and Operations.
