Daytime operations to be suspended for 6 months

Kochi, March 18

Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) is to close down the aircraft operations for six months from November, during daytime on account of runway re-carpeting work.

CIAL’s Managing Director, Mr S. Bharath, said in a release that the work would be carried out from November to May 2009 between 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and (during that period) the runway would be open for flight operations after 8 p.m. up to 10 a.m. the next day. He said that there would not be any difficulties when the runway would be operational for aircraft movements in the night.

The company has already given advance intimation to all operating lines and other agencies concerned as per the standard practice followed in airports for this kind of work and has also requested them to reschedule flights as per the plan, he said.

He pointed out that the bituminous runway needed to be re-carpeted to maintain the surface up to acceptable standards and also to ensure longer life. CIAL, he said, did not anticipate any reduction in flight/passenger movements or revenue of the airport in view of the work. Also there would not be any difficulties to passengers and cargo movements through the airport.

The runway re-carpeting operations will also not affect the flow of tourists to the airport and the State during this period. Both domestic and international flights would continue to operate at CIAL but the schedule of their timings would be different.
