‘Concentrate more on nutrition’

Madurai, March 18

Dr Ashish Bose, member of the Reconstituted National Commission on Population and honorary professor at the Institute of Economic Growth (New Delhi), suggested that Tamil Nadu concentrate more on nutrition. Speaking to Business Line on Tuesday, he said that in a district-level survey on ‘Rural Public Health Delivery in States’, Tamil Nadu stood much better in terms of SIS indicators — staff, infrastructure and equipment with supply of d rugs in public health centres. The awareness on family planning was high in the State and it was time to turn the focus on nutrition, as the condition of women was bad and many were found to be anaemic, he mentioned. He added that to reflect the approach the name of the Ministry of Health and Family Planning should be changed to the Ministry of Health and Nutrition. Dr Bose was in the city to deliver a series of lectures on ‘Population Dynamics’ under UGC Visiting Faculty Programme at the Post Graduate Department of Sociology, The Madura College, Madurai. —
