Higher volumes on offer at Coonoor sales

Coonoor, March 19 As Friday is a holiday on account of “Good Friday”, the dust auctions of the Coonoor Trade Association (CTTA) normally scheduled for Fridays will take place on Thursday.

A volume of 2.72 lakh kgs has been catalogued. This is marginally higher than 2.51 lakh kgs offered last week.

Of this, as much as 2.31 lakh kgs belong to CTC category and only 0.41 lakh kgs, orthodox. The proportion of orthodox was low in this week’s leaf auctions as well. There, only 0.23 lakh kgs out of a total of 5.55 lakh kgs belonged to orthodox while 5.32 lakh kgs were of CTC varieties. Last week, leaf offer totalled 5.89 lakh kgs.

In all, out of 8.27 lakh kgs offered this week, only 0.64 lakh kgs belong to orthodox, while 7.63 lakh kgs, CTC. Last week, a higher volume of 8.4 lakh kgs was offered.

Still, the present volume is far higher than the 5.44 lakh kgs offered this time last year.

Awaiting demand

Auctioneers said that they are waiting for better demand this week. Last week, due to irregular demand, the market was erratic. Better medium CTC leaf and dust grades lost Rs 2 a kg. Fannings gained a rupee. Plainer bolder ones were barely steady. Secondary orthodox lost up to a rupee.
