TN agri varsity to take up research on sting-less bees

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore, March 19

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) will take up exclusive research on sting-less bees as part of the department of biotechnology’s network project.

The project will specifically involve the TNAU undertaking study on bio-ecology of stingless bees and evolving improved meliponicultural (honey yield) techniques. The research project will bring out life secrets of stingless bees and document floral resources that provide nectar, pollen and resin for their sustenance.

Techniques

According to the TNAU Director of Research, Dr B, Chandrasekharan, the project is intended to evolve techniques for multiplying and managing these bee colonies for obtaining twin benefits of medicinal honey and crop pollination for the end-users. The project will strive to evolve suitable hives that will permit good colony growth and efficient honey extraction.

The bee research project is part of a three-year new network project on morphometry and phylogenetic research on honey and stingless bee species sponsored by the department of biotechnology of the national resource development board.

The project, according to the TNAU Vice-Chancellor, Dr C. Ramasamy, aimed at intensifying research on honey bees and stingless bees, will be implemented in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra besides Assam and Kashmir involving eight institutions.

The network research will document biodiversity of honey bees and stingless bees in 30 different agroclimatic zones. Besides tracing the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationship of honey bee population occurring in different agro-climatic regions through use of mircosatellite markers and mitochondrial genes, the project will facilitate taking up molecular characterisation of native honey bee species.
