CALS Refineries to set up project in West Bengal

Kolkata, March 19 CALS Refineries Ltd today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Haldia Development Authority (HDA) and the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation to set up a 20 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) capacity refinery project at Haldia and Nayachar in three phases at a cumulative investment of Rs 20,000 crore.

The MoU was signed at Writers’ Buildings here in the presence of the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, and the State’s Minister for Industries & Commerce, Mr Nirupam Sen, among others.

The first phase of the project envisages the setting up of a five mtpa capacity refinery at Haldia at an investment of Rs 4,000 crore. It will be spread over 400 acres of land and provide gainful engagement to 1,500 people directly and indirectly. It is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2010.

The second phase of the project also envisages the setting up of another five mtpa refining capacity spread over 400-500 acres of land at Haldia at an investment of Rs 4,000 crore. The second phase of the project is slated to be commissioned by the end of 2010.

In the third phase of the project, Rs 12,000 crore will be invested in setting up a refining capacity of 10 mtpa at Nayachar near Haldia at an investment of Rs 12,000 crore. The third phase of the project is expected to be commissioned by 2013. In its entirety, the project will provide direct and indirect employment to 6,000-8,000 people.
