Six maritime States eye Centre’s shipyard project

Our Bureau

New Delhi, March 20 Six maritime State Governments are vying to have the Centre’s proposed shipyards located in their territory. Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Gujarat had responded to the Shipping Ministry request to identify suitable location for setting up international size shipyards, one each in the East coast and West coast of the country.

The Shipping Ministry has proposed setting up these shipyards on a public-private partnership basis.

Suggested sites

Karnataka suggested Tadri port (Kundle beach) and Belekeri Port (Honne beach), Kerala has suggested Poovar (Thiruvananthapuram district on Kerala-Tamil Nadu border), while Orissa has suggested four locations — Nuagarh (Astaranga, Puri district), Palur (Ganjam), Gopalpur port at Arjipalli, Chhatrapur (Ganjam) and Bahuda Muhana at Sonepur (Ganjam district).

Andhra Pradesh has suggested Vodaveru in Prakasam district and Gujarat suggested stretches such as Salaya, Jodiya, Mundra, Chanch, Pipavav and Tuna. West Bengal had not suggested any specific site.

The minimum land required for the suggested sites was 1,000-1,500 acres and 2.5 km waterfront (with a draft of 10-12 metres), apart from desired rail and road connectivity.

This information was provided by the Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu, in Lok Sabha in response to a question.

Mumbai Port Trust and Ennore Port Ltd have been authorised to identify three-four alternative sites, with the help of consultants.
