Goafest kicks off on April 3

Swetha Kannan

Bangalore, March 20 Whining about what ails the advertising industry will get the sector nowhere.

What is required is an attempt to unlock the value to enable the industry to demand what it deserves and also make the client sit up and take notice, says Mr Jagdip Bakshi, Chairman — Goafest 2008, the annual awards festival for advertising excellence in the country. Goafest 2008, which will kick off on April 3, is a conclave that will see industry heads discussing various ways of ‘Nailing the true value in the advertising industry’.

“Are advertisers valuing marketing assets correctly? Is the industry doing anything to build value for itself?” are questions that the conclave will attempt to answer.

Speakers

It will be a “forward looking” discussion, says Mr Bakshi, also the CEO of Contract Advertising (India). Goafest 2008 has roped in Mr Lalit Modi, Chairman of the Indian Premier League, and Mr Kiran Karnik of Nasscomm, who will share their views on “how to create value and hold on to it.”

The speakers at Goafest also include Mr Donald Gunn of the famous Gunn Report; Mr Craig Davis, worldwide creative chief JWT; Mr Stephen Gatfield, Chief Executive Officer, Lowe Worldwide; and Mr Herman Vaske of Emotional network.

Beyond the fest

Looking beyond Goafest, Mr Bakshi has a few long-term plans for the industry.

They include getting the top 20 agencies in the country to come together to frame a “common programme” so that the advertising industry develops a strong body like Nasscom for the software sector, says Mr Bakshi.

“We need standards and systems of payment and compensation so that the industry does not become a ‘dog eats dog world’.” The industry also needs to address the issue of attracting young talent.

Awards

Goafest is organised by the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI).

Apart from the conclave, the highlight of three-day fest is the ‘Abby’ awards — for excellence in advertising and communication — from the Ad Club Bombay.

Awards will be given for 14 categories across verticals such as print, film, radio, out of home and integrated advertising. The Abby has received about 3,800 entries from across India.

This year’s jury comprises Mr Piyush Pandey, Executive Chairman & National Creative Director, Indian and South Asia O&M; Mr K.V. Sridhar NCD, Leo Burnett; Mr Alok Nanda, Director Alok Nanda Communications; and Mr Ravi Deshpande, Chief Creative Officer, Contract.
