Our Bureau

Hyderabad, March 20 The Krishna & Godavari Basin Organisation, Central Water Commission, organised a programme to mark the World Water Day 2008 here on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Sutirtha Bhattacharya, Secretary (Projects), I & CAD Department, Government of Andhra Pradesh, said that it was important to take effective steps to utilise water efficiently to improve the quality of life.

“India commands merely four per cent of the global freshwater resources but supports 17 per cent of the total world population. So, therefore, we need to develop, manage and utilise water in a sustainable manner to maintain the balance between the competing multi-sectoral interests,” he said.

Mr Bhattacharya also said that the water resources sector like any other sector needs trained and motivated human resource development activities.

“The king of approach suggested at various forums requires multi-level training of personnel involved in the sector to undertake the challenging tasks ahead,” he added.

According to Mr Y.V. Dharma Rao, former Chief Engineer of the Central Water Commission, the challenge in the water sector is to take care of the needs of development.
