Africa focus

The editorial “Into Africa” (Business Line, March 21) has hit the nail on the head in a straight, simple and direct manner. One hopes it will not escape the attention of New Delhi’s policy-makers and India’s elite business class.

The undeniable fact is that India’s claims of foreign policy having long been Africa-focussed in essence and spirit ring hollow. This is particularly so in the area of Indo-African economic relationships.

India continues to focus on trade for trade’s sake, and that too on a handful of countries. The Prime Minister’s visit to Africa hardly made a difference. Africa, with its 53 countries, has huge potential: it is the continent of the present century. For India to continue to ignore it would be a colossal mistake.
