Well marked ‘low’ weakens, productive still

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram, March 23

Saturday’s well-marked ‘low’ in the southeast Arabian Sea weakened into a conventional ‘low’ on Sunday, but not before dumping some very heavy to heavy rainfall over north Kerala and adjoining south and interior Karnataka.

The ‘low’ was traced to east-central and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea off the Kerala-Karnataka coasts on Sunday morning even as overnight rain lashed most places in Telangana and at many places in Tamil Nadu as well, an update from the Regional Met Centre (RMC) in Chennai said.

HEAVY FALLS

Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh too received some isolated showers as the rain belt penetrated the east-northeast into the peninsular interior. The following stations recorded very heavy to heavy rainfall (in cm):

Karkala (Udupi) and Gurumitkal (Gulburga)-15 each; Kalasa (Chickmagalur)-14; Koppal-13 and Mudbidre (Dakshina Kannada)-12; Badami (Bagalkote), Sedam (Gulburga) and Sringeri (Chickmagalur)-11 each; Nargund (Gadag); Kannur, Panambur, Mani (Dakshina Kannada),Deodurg (Raichur) and Kustagi (Chickmagalur)-10 each. Meanwhile, the US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) said in its update on Saturday night that the convection associated with the ‘low’ has dissipated.

TROUGH OVER LAND

According to an India Meteorological Department (IMD) update, the trough originating from the ‘low’ was traced as entering land, which lay extended up to west Madhya Pradesh on Sunday (Gujarat-bound the previous day) after meandering through interior Karnataka, madhya Maharashtra and Marathawada.

A forecast by the RMC-Chennai valid for the next two days said that rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over coastal Karnataka and Telangana; at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Lakshadweep, south coastal Andhra Pradeshand interior Karnataka; and at a few places over Rayalaseema and north coastal Andhra Pradesh.

RAIN WARNING

Heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh,Telangana, Kerala and Lakshadweep during the next 48 hours.

The rains are seen propagating in an east-northeast track along the southeast coast, reaching up to Orissa-West Bengal by April 27 and merging with the rain belt active in that region. Outlook by the Ensemble Forecast System of the US Navy’s Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Centre said the occasional thundershowers could punctuate the peninsular weather until the month-end.

Small break-outs of rain events have been indicated for south Kerala and south Tamil Nadu around this time from moisture incursion, after westerlies-to-southwesterlies from an incoming western disturbance disrupts the proceedings along the Andhra Pradesh-Orissa coast.
