Govt committed to harnessing N-energy: PM

— Ramesh Sharma

Fulfilling commitment: The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, with the Union Minister for Power, Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde, and the Chief Minister of Delhi, Ms Sheila Dikshit, at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the 1500-MW Pragati Phase-III, Gas power project, Bawana, in the Capital on Monday.

New Delhi, March 24 The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, said here on Monday that the Centre was committed to harnessing nuclear energy as part of a multi-pronged strategy towards diversifying the country’s energy base to address energy security concerns.

Widening energy basket

“Our Government is committed to further development of nuclear energy, both as an environment friendly source of power and as a means of widening the energy basket available to us,” he said while laying the foundation stone for the Rs 5,000 crore gas-based power project at Bawana here.

The plant is to be commissioned ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The Prime Minister said that while some sources of energy may be cheap today, the country needs to think for the future generations.

“Our energy needs are bound to grow. We will be failing in the duty to our nation and to posterity, if we do not look ahead and take steps for not just today and tomorrow but for future generations,” he said.

Dr Singh said the strategy for energy security was multi-pronged.

Multi-pronged strategy

“We don’t have the luxury of depending upon only one or two sources,” he said.

Currently, nuclear energy accounts for just three per cent of the country’s installed power generation capacity, while over 60 per cent is being serviced by coal.

India is in the process of pushing through a civilian nuclear deal with the US that could give it access to global nuclear fuel supplies and technology, but the deal has been opposed by the Government’s Left allies on the ground that it would compromise India’s sovereignty.
