‘Create agri infrastructure for sustaining rural jobs’

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, March 24 Even as the Tamil Nadu budget has offered to reduce the farm loan rate, it has not made any concrete proposal to improve the agriculture production on a long term basis, which is important to sustain rural employment, Mr Vyapuri, President of the United Farmers Association of Salem, has said.

He was also unhappy that the budget had failed to address the core issue of increasing the minimum support price for paddy growers, up to Rs 1,000 for rabi and Rs 1,500 for kariff crop, as demanded by the paddy growers consortium which took up the cause in December last. The State had remained content just recommending the case to the Centre, he added.

Actual problems

Stating that the budget had failed to understand the actual problems faced by the farmers whose requirement cannot be met only by offering ‘freebees’ or loan waivers but also by creating conditions to carry on long-term sustenance of agriculture operation.

While actual farm operations would only last for 100 days, according to Mr Vyapuri, it would help if facilities were made available within the village to keep the farmers engaged the remaining days in a year. This will add value to their produce and will lead to sustenance of agriculture through job opportunities for the rural youth, he added.
