Kochi, March 24 Indian Railways is exploring the possibility of setting up a high-speed rail corridor connecting Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore and Kochi, according to Mr K.C. Jena, Chairman of the Railway Board.

Speaking to newspersons here, he said that six high-speed passenger corridors have been planned as a public-private partnership.

Interested State governments and the Railways will pool in equal funds for the same.

He pointed out that a global tender would soon be called to fix a consultant in this regard.

Infrastructure funding

Mr Jena, who is also the ex-officio Principal Secretary to the Railway Ministry, is on a State-wide tour to oversee rail-development works, said that Kerala has been allotted Rs 349 crore for the next financial year against Rs 283 crore sanctioned in the previous year with an objective to develop infrastructure.

He said that the rail-connectivity to the proposed Vallarpadam international container transhipment terminal project would be completed by 2009.

On the proposed Angamaly-Sabarimala rail link, Mr Jena said that the Railway is keen to carryout the work, which has at present been held up due to land acquisition issues.

Package tours

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation and the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation have joined hands to start a few package tours connecting different tourism destinations in the State. The possibility of introducing a rail package connecting Goa and Kerala too, is being planned, he added.
