Unrealistic salaries

A welcome feature of the recommendation of the Sixth Pay Commission is the proposal to introduce only three national holidays. The general public, commercial and industrial undertakings would welcome the proposal replacing the existing number of holidays, which are far too many.

Bonus based on performance is yet another praiseworthy measure. The existing bonus pattern — bonus for all — should be scrapped in toto as it only fuelled lethargy and inefficiency. After the huge increase in pay packets, there is absolutely no justification for bonus as it is considered as a deferred pay.

Since the 40-lakh Government babus will be flush with disposable surplus, there is bound to be inflation. As a short-term measure to reduce the impact of inflation, the Government should consider the introduction of Compulsory Deposit Scheme with a lock-in period of three years.

What about the unorganised sector? They are left in the lurch with no security of service, no medical benefits, or loans for housing and children’s education.

It is not fair and it is a mockery of the administration if the Government agrees to the recommendation to increase the salary of senior government officials from Rs 30,000 to Rs 80,000 or Rs 90,000. Obviously, some members of the Pay Commission will manage to see it through to benefit a small coterie of bureaucrats.
