Sri Lanka wooing tourists from India

Sankar Radhakrishnan

Thiruvananthapuram, March 25 Sri Lanka’s tourism authorities see India as a market with great potential.

According to Mr Hiran Cooray, Member-Board of Management, Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, India already accounts for the largest number of visitors to Sri Lanka. Approximately 120,000 Indians visited the country last year. While many of these Indian visitors are believed to be business visitors, at least 50,000 are on holiday, he added.

Therefore, Sri Lanka’s tourism authorities see a significant opportunity to attract more visitors from India, said Mr Cooray who is also the Deputy Chairman of the Colombo-based Jetwing Hotels.

With India as a major target market, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority will spend a substantial portion of its promotional budget on attracting tourists from the country. In association with the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, it has started doing roadshows in cities across India and will continue to do this. Sri Lanka Tourism currently has a representative in New Delhi, but is planning to appoint at least two more representatives in the country, perhaps in Mumbai and Bangalore, Mr Cooray said. Launched some months ago, the ‘Ramayana trail’ that takes visitors to Sri Lankan locations associated with the Ramayana, is expected to appeal to Indian tourists, he added.

Sri Lanka has also embarked on an initiative called ‘A Tourism Earth Lung – Towards a Carbon Clean Sri Lanka’. The initiative has three aspects — stopping deforestation in Sri Lanka, re-generating forests and achieving carbon neutrality by preventing carbon emissions, Mr Cooray explained.
