Health cover scheme for disabled poor

New Delhi, March 26 The Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Ms. Meira Kumar, launched “Nirmaya”-- a Health Insurance Scheme for the welfare of persons with autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and multiple disabilities, on Wednesday.

A pilot project would be undertaken in 10 selected districts across the country.

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has awarded the mandate to ICICI Lombard General Insurance to provide health insurance to a maximum of 1,00,000 below poverty line specially-abled persons in ten districts of Central Delhi in Delhi, Chandigarh in Haryana, Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, Kaimur in Bihar, Agarthala in the North Eastern Region, Raebareily in UP, Erode in Tamil Nadu, Ernakulam in Kerala, Ahmedabad in Gujarat and Bhageshwar in Uttarakhand.

Ms Kumar distributed photo ID cards to the first 20 specially-abled people.

The Niramaya policy, which will be issued to individuals on a named basis, will have sum insured per person up to Rs.100,000.

The insurance premium of Rs 99 excluding service tax, would be funded by National Trust (Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment).

The insurance cover is applicable for a period of one year from March 5, 2008. The above poverty line persons can also avail this facility by paying the suitable premium, the Minister added.
