Tea Record price for Chamraj handmade teas L.N. Revathy Coimbatore, March 26 Handmade teas, produced by Chamraj Estate in the Nilgiris, fetched a record price of Rs 1,925/kg at the Kochi tea auction on Wednesday. The tea was auctioned by Forbes Ewart & Figgis (P) Ltd and bought by Kochi-based Parekh Tea. Stated to be the highest price realised so far this year, the fancy pick, market sources say is for a buyer in Delhi. Mr D. Hegde, Director, Chamraj Estate, told Business Line that the estate had made private sale of such handmade teas about a month ago. “These are in great demand in the German and Japanese market. We have so far sold about 500 kg. We decided to route one lot (40 kg) of such specialty tea through the auction today.” Specialty gradesThe estate, belonging to the United Nilgiri Tea Estates Co Ltd, is known for making specialty tea grades, such as Chamraj Golden Tips. “This is possible only in winter months and at higher elevation,” Mr Hegde said.
