Environment States - Andhra Pradesh Indian Green Building council launches Hyderabad Chapter Our Bureau Hyderabad, March 27 The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has launched its Hyderabad Chapter at the CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre taking the total number of chapters across the country to six. The earlier chapters were launched in Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata and Mumbai. “The main objective of the chapters is to enable faster and deeper reach of green building concepts to wider sections of stakeholders and to provide a platform for networking at the regional level,” Mr Sanjay Chawla, Business Head (Commercial & SEZ), Maytas Properties Pvt Ltd and Chairman of the Hyderabad Chapter, said after the launch. He added that the chapter would not only focus on Hyderabad but will also extend to Tier-II cities in the State. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Prem C. Jain, Chairman, IGBC, said, “Starting with one registered building in 2002, the number of green building registered has nearly doubled each year till 2007. Currently, the number of registered green buildings in the country is 195, with 110 million sq. ft. of built in area.” Dr Jain also said that he foresees India to be one of the leaders in the green building movement in the years to come and expects around 10,000 green building in the country by 2012. According to Mr S. Srinivas, Principal Counsellor, CII Godrej Green Business Centre, the IGBC is looking at launching another four to five chapters by the end of the year. “When the green building movement started in India, the incremental costs were very high but over the years the costs are also coming down. “However, the challenges for the future are to have more of LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) professionals and there is also a need to rope in the Government in the green building movement in the country,” he said.
