Rlys to spend $163.5 m on workshop modernisation

New Delhi, March 27 Indian Railways plans to invest $163.5 million on modernising its workshops over the next one year, which includes $23.5 million on procuring machines to be used in the workshops.

The Railways has over 50 independent mechanical engineering workshops and production units.

It is looking to modernise in areas concerning wheel machining automation, metal forming, metal cutting, metal finishing, rescue devices, measurement tools and IT.

Inaugurating a two-day international seminar on “Railway Workshop Modernisation and New technology in Machine Tools”, Mr R.K. Rao, Member Mechanical, Railway Board, said, “The Railways is expected to invest approximately $23.5 million for procurement of machines and approximately $140 million for modernisation of workshops over the next one year.”

The seminar was organised by the Central Organisation for Modernisation of Workshops, a unit dedicated to modernising age-old workshops.
