Shipping Ministry to appoint consultants for deep draught ports Our Bureau Hyderabad, March 27 The Union Ministry of Shipping will appoint consultants to identify the locations and study feasibility for locating the four deep draught ports this year. Mr Rakesh Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Ports, Department of Shipping), has said that one of the five deep sea ports planned in the 11th Plan would come up in West Bengal. Consultants were short-listed for this project. “The State Government wants to build one on its own,” he said. Mr Srivastava was here to address a CEO Roundtable on ‘India’s Infrastructure Development’ at the two-day international conclave Infrastructure Today. He said the Government would set up a corpus of Rs 5,000 crore, to begin with, for the development of small and medium ports. Stating that the present Government laid emphasis on development of infrastructure, he said about 360 projects were identified for development with a total outlay of Rs 55,401 crore. Of this, the private sector would contribute Rs 36,868 crore. About 16 projects were operational with private investments to the tune of Rs 5,020 crore, he said. “The idea is to increase the total capacity by 1,016 million tonnes from the 735 million tonnes in 2006-07,” he said.
