Ajinomoto’s plan for production in India

D. Murali

Chennai, March 27

Ajinomoto is planning to open its manufacturing facility in India. “Once the consumption level comes to 25,000 tonnes a year, we will be setting up a plant, quite likely in Tamil Nadu, perhaps in two years,” said Mr T. Manoharan, Managing Director of Ajinomoto India Pvt Ltd.

“The main raw materials for our product MSG (monosodium glutamate) are tapioca and sugarcane, which are available in plenty, in the State,” he told Business Line. “For instance, nearly 90 per cent of the country’s tapioca cultivation happens in Tamil Nadu, more specifically, in and around Salem.” The current annual consumption of MSG is about 12,000 tonnes, growing at 15 per cent per year, informed Mr Manoharan. “Our main customers are the food processing industrial units and hotels/restaurants, where we find an increasing acceptance of the product as a taste enhancer.”

At present, Ajinomoto India imports MSG from its sister unit in Thailand and repacks the same at a plant near Chennai.
