ASCI meet on Police reforms

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, March 28 Police in several parts of India seemed over-burdened with several non-core police functions and spend disproportionate time in duties such as VIP bandobust rather than ensuring safety of the public.

Police officers at all levels also get transferred frequently and bear a lot of extraneous interference in their professional work.

A national seminar to address some of these issues confronting the police and the judicial system is being organised by the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) and the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) jointly here.

The theme of the seminar is ‘Good Governance and Police Reforms’. Several commissions and committees have examined in detail how policing should be improved in India. Yet, nothing has come out of them, said a press release from ASCI. However, post the Supreme Court judgement in 2006, several States have started framing new police acts. These issues would also come up for discussion, the release said.
