‘Proper infrastructure may help achieve second green revolution’

Our Bureau

Mangalore, March 30 The dream of achieving a second green revolution can be fulfilled, if infrastructure facilities like irrigation, power, marketing and rural roads are made available, according to Prof G.V. Joshi, Professor of Economics and Dean of Arts Faculty at Mangalore University.

Delivering a special lecture on ‘Economic growth and inflation in India’ at Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management at Nitte in Udupi district, he said that the neglect of the farming sector and the falling public investment in agriculture have weakened the agricultural base in the country. The mismatch between demand and supply in respect of agricultural commodities is something which can cause alarm in the days to come.

Corporatisation of agriculture may be tried on an experimental basis. It can be extended to other parts of the country if the results are encouraging, he said.

lack of coordination

The monetary policy of the Reserve Bank of India for mopping up liquidity has not produced the expected result because of fiscal indiscipline and lack of coordination between the monetary and fiscal policy. Both the Finance Ministry and RBI have conceptual differences about interest rates, growth process and foreign direct investments. The obvious result of these conceptual differences is the growth followed by forces of inflation that may undermine the growth process itself, he added.
