‘Decentralised ownership’ mooted for companies

Chennai, March 30

If Indian companies want to grow faster, they will have to look at ‘decentralised ownership’ at every level in the organisation, according Mr V. Srinivasan, Past President Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Chairman, W.S. Industries (India) Pvt Ltd.

“Let us move away from the concept of an employee and look at our co-workers as other entrepreneurs, “ he said addressing a packed audience at ‘The Entrepreneurship Summit,’ an event organised by the CII titled ‘Unleashing the entrepreneurial spirit in Tamil Nadu.’ He believed that future management thought would be linked to this concept.

After releasing a book titled ‘101 Entrepreneurs of Tamil Nadu’, Mr Srinivasan touched upon one of the problems faced by entrepreneurs across industries – attrition. “Companies who insist on loyalty today will go no where. Instead, entrepreneurs must look at creating an atmosphere of fun for employees,” he said.

Earlier in the event, Ms Kami Narayan, Chief Executive Officer, PreMedia Global Pvt Ltd, said entrepreneurs must stay away from hiring people with similar skills as themselves. “You don’t want to grow an organisation of clones. Diversity matters,” she said.

However, she added that not everyone was suited to working in an entrepreneurial set-up with its peculiarities such as a loosely structured set-up and working under financial constraints.

Therefore, entrepreneurs must spend time choosing the right employees.
