118% capacity utilisation at SAIL

New Delhi, April 1

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has produced a record 13.04 million tonnes (mt) of saleable steel during fiscal 2007-08. The company has achieved a capacity utilisation of 118 per cent. Production of hot metal and crude steel during the year stood at 15.2 mt and 14 mt respectively while finished steel output was at 10.8 mt, according to a company release. This was made possible by utilising full potential of available assets and human resources, R&D interventions, and debottlenecking. The captive mines of SAIL met 100 per cent of the company’s iron ore requirement and produced around 25.7 mt of iron ore during the year. Simultaneously, coal production by the company’s captive collieries almost doubled during the year to 1.108 mt, the release added. —
